Francis Bacon (artist)

This Abstract Expressionist painter, with a totally personal way to convey his idea of what human beings are like, died at the end of April 1992 in Madrid. This year the Prado Museum will be hosting the major retrospective exhibition on Francis Bacon (Practical Info), organised in collaboration with the Modern Tate Museum (London) and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (NYC), to commemorate the centenary of the artit’s birth in October 1909. The exhibition wil be on from Feb 3 to April 19, in case you want to visit it.
F. Bacon loved visiting the Prado Museum so he eventually settled here. He would spend long hours looking at Goya’s and Velazquez’s paintings. Actually, that’s where he spent most of the time in his last year of life. In his own paintings, you can trace what he learned from Goya, Picasso, Munch, Van Gogh… You see, he was a self-taught painter. Looking at his pictures you can also feel how sad, angry or anguished he felt when contemplating the world. (He actually destroyed much of what he painted.)
Bacon Quotes: I paint for myself. I don’t know how to do anything else, anyway. Also I have to earn my living, and occupy myself. (More in comment below.)
