“Self-Evident” by Ani Difranco

For Avanzado 2 (anybody is welcome to post, though). Post here your comments on language, cultural references, topics in this powerful song by Ani Difranco. Listen to the song while looking at some pictures which will help you interpret some of the references. If there is enough interest or posting, we could create a webpage on the analysis of this song at the Students’ Corner (EOI Getafe), and include some other videos. Enjoy!

  1. Is nobody going to listen to this song and/or pose comments or questions? 😀
Let me tell you — it’s an interesting piece of work!

I love the part where she says:

    Take away our Playstations
and we are a third world nation

Although I’m actually not into using “third world”. I actually use “superexploited countries”!

    Night night

  2. My favorite lines:

    Us people, we’re just poems
    We’re 90% metaphor

    And the smoke was deafening

    And every dumb action movie
    was summarily surpassed

And this part gives me goose bumps!:

    You can keep the Pentagon
    You can keep the propaganda
You can keep each and every TV
that’s been trying to convince me
    to participate
in some prep school punk’s plan
    to perpetuate retribution
    perpetuate retribution

And when the music starts… with the toast! Whoah! It’s just far too much!

By the way, the Pine Ridge Reservation is an Indian Rez in one of the Dakotas.

Peace in the form of a dream…

And we hold these truths to be self-evident:
Number 1 George W. Bush is not president
Number 2 America is not a true democracy
Number 3 the media is not fooling me

    the CIA
    or is it the KGB?
    committing countless crimes
    against humanity

And what about this ending, and the very awesome last line?

    another key
    another door
    10% literal
    90% metaphor
3000 some poems disguised as people
on an almost too perfect day
    must be more than pawns
    in some asshole’s passion play
    so now it’s your job
    and it’s my job
    to make it that way
to make sure they didn’t die in vain

Ssshhh… baby listen… hear the train?

    A powerful song. Congratulations, Ani!
